It is possible that using educational software in class might have encouraged students to take less traditional ways of learning a language - such as playing games or watching films in that language - more seriously. I also believe some students also realized that every little thing helps their progress, so it is important that they get involved.

Yes, definetely. They had to create something, no matter if a film or software, and that is for sure very creative. I would stress on this point rather than in raw knowledge, in fact.
